How many magnitude 5.8+ earthquakes will be recorded in Asia between May 26–June 8, 2026?

About Market

MARKET SUMMARY

This market centers on how many earthquakes of magnitude 5.8 or above will be officially recorded in the Asia region between May 26 and June 8, 2026, across four mutually exclusive count brackets. Asia spans several of the world's most tectonically active zones — including the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Himalayan collision belt, and the Indonesian archipelago — making it one of the most seismically dynamic regions globally, and the 14-day observation window represents a discrete measurement period for capturing elevated seismic activity across the region. Traders are evaluating historical seismicity rates, recent tectonic patterns, and regional fault behavior to assess which count bracket is most likely to reflect the final official tally when the observation window closes.

RULES
  1. Market Outcomes and Resolution Criteria: This market resolves to YES if exactly 1 earthquake of magnitude 5.8 or above is officially recorded within the Asia region during the observation window (May 26, 2026, 00:00 UTC through June 8, 2026, 23:59 UTC). It resolves to NO if any other count — including 0 — is recorded. It resolves to Tie if the official data source is unavailable or no final count can be confirmed by June 15, 2026; in the event of a Tie resolution, all positions settle at $0.50 per share.

  2. Definition of Qualifying Earthquake: A "qualifying earthquake" is any seismic event with a reported moment magnitude (Mw) of 5.8 or greater, with an epicenter located within the Asian continent and its adjacent island arcs (including but not limited to Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, India, Pakistan, Iran, and surrounding territories), as catalogued by the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program. If USGS revises a magnitude below 5.8 after initial reporting, the revised figure governs.

  3. Official Sources and Evidence: The primary resolution source is the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program catalog (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/), filtered for the Asia region and magnitude ≥ 5.8 over the observation window. Final counts are based on confirmed catalog entries, not real-time or preliminary alerts. Secondary sources such as EMSC or regional seismological agencies may be used for confirmation only and cannot override USGS.

  4. Resolution Timing: The market resolves as soon as reasonably practical after June 8, 2026, 23:59 UTC, once the USGS catalog reflects finalized entries for the observation window. A buffer of up to 48 hours may be applied to allow for any magnitude revisions before resolution is confirmed.

  5. Handling Edge Cases: These four submarkets are mutually exclusive — only one can resolve YES. If 0 qualifying earthquakes are recorded, all four markets resolve NO. Events with disputed epicenter locations on the boundary of the defined Asia region are included if USGS classifies them within the region.

  6. Ambiguities and Disputes: If conflicting counts arise between USGS and secondary sources, the USGS catalog takes precedence. If USGS revises a magnitude after resolution has been triggered, resolution stands on the figure available at the time the market resolved unless the revision is published within the 48-hour buffer window.
